The Old Fashioned, A True Classic

The origins of this cocktail go back so far that it’s tough to trust anyone who says they created it. (Looking ay you Louisville) The original drink was apparently named the Whiskey Cocktail, and this name and basic recipe stayed fairly unchanged for several decades into the late 1800s. At this time the recipe was quite simple, a sugar cube, a few dashes of bitters, several blocks of ice, combined with American whiskey. Then in 1880 that The Chicago Tribune printed and defined it as an “old-fashioned cocktail.” The name was inspired by the many drinkers who refused to change with the times and ordered their drinks the old fashioned way; a brown spirit, sugar, water and bitters.

The Old-Fashioned has become extremely popular again in the United States in the last decade, in fact it’s so popular that it’s one of the most Googled cocktail recipes and is one of the most ordered drinks in the United States. We have created some of our own recipes here at Drinkin’ Buds (With More to come), check them out on the recipe page at our Drinkin’ Buds website.

The Wisconsin Old Fashioned

The popularization of domestic brandy in Wisconsin can be traced to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, a fair held in nearby Chicago. It was here that three gentlemen from California introduced their namesake brandy; Korbel to the millions in attendance.

It quickly became very popular in Wisconsin, where many with German and Polish ancestry were eager for a domestic take on an old country spirit. The rest as they say is history, today Wisconsin consumes 50% of the brandy that Korbel produces, making state residents the top consumers of brandy in the U.S.

Wisconsin Tradition – Old Fashioned Cocktail

If you order an Old Fashioned in 49 out of 50 states, you can expect a whiskey cocktail made with sugar, water and bitters; however, in Wisconsin the Old Fashioned has its own identity that is woven into the fabric of the state as much as supper clubs, cheese, and cows.

Wisconsinites swap their whiskey for a brandy-based mixture served one of three ways: sweet, sour or press. ‘Sweet’ is with 7-Up, ‘sour’ is with Squirt soda or pre-packaged sour mix, and ‘press’ is half 7-Up, half club soda. A Wisconsin brandy Old Fashioned also will contain a muddled mixture of maraschino cherries, orange slice, sugar and bitters, among other possible garnishes that can range from olives to cheese curds!
